They see things that they want to forget ( like putting new batteries in a toy), experiences they don’t remember (moments when she was happy or sad), or things that used to make them feel secure (holding hands, being hugged). So Riley tries to find her way out - while also finding all sorts of lost children along the process. Like its predecessor, the second wave lasted ten weeks. In August the epidemic was officially declared over.Ĭases continued intermittently for months, but by October, admissions and deaths were in single figures. Then, as in April, the numbers began to decline. Sydney’s hospital capacity again was exceeded. The second wave’s peak arrived in the first week of July, with 850 deaths across NSW and 2,400 for the month. There is a stage at which governmental responsibility for the public health ends. The Sydney Morning Herald concurred, declaring It hoped the public by now realised the gravity of the danger and that it should be sufficient to warn them to avoid the chances of infection. The government goes for “burn out”Īfter two unsuccessful attempts to defeat the epidemic - at great social and economic cost - the government decided to let it take its course. This time, notwithstanding a mounting death toll, the NSW cabinet decided against reinstating restrictions, but urged people to impose their own restraints. The resurgence came with a virulence surpassing the worst days of April. After ten weeks the epidemic seemed to have run its course, but as May turned to June, new cases appeared. Sydney’s hospital capacity was exceeded and the state’s death toll for April totalled 1,395. The Ministry fiddled for popularity while the country was threatened with this terrible pestilence. Chastened by the criticism of its earlier measures, the government delayed reimposing restrictions until early April, allowing the virus to take hold. There was also debate about the usefulness of closing schools, especially in the metropolitan area. It was particularly critical that the order requiring mask-wearing was not limited to confined spaces, such as public transport. The Labor opposition accused it of overreacting and imposing unnecessary economic and social burdens on people. By contrast, Victoria, which had taken three weeks before introducing more limited restrictions, recorded 489 deaths.Īt the end of February, NSW lifted most restrictions.Įven so, the state government did not escape a political attack. Nevertheless, NSW’s prompt and thorough application of restrictions initially proved successful.ĭuring February, Sydney’s hospital admissions were only 139, while total deaths across the state were 15. Later, crowds of spectators would be permitted to watch football matches while racecourses were closed. But masked churchgoers, observing physical distancing, were forbidden to assemble outside for worship. People were allowed to ride in crowded public transport to thronged beaches. But inconsistencies led to complaints, especially from churches and the owners of theatres and racecourses. Generally, the restrictions were received with little demur. Thereafter, each state went its own way and the Commonwealth, with few powers and little money compared with today, effectively left them to it. It also imposed restrictions on travel from Victoria in breach of the federal-state agreement. National Library of AustraliaĪcting quickly, in late January, the NSW government ordered “everyone shall wear a mask,” while all libraries, schools, churches, theatres, public halls, and places of indoor public entertainment in metropolitan Sydney were told to close. The NSW government quickly imposed restrictions on the population when Spanish flu first arrived. Shutdown circa 1919: libraries, theatres, churches close On January 25, Sydney’s newspapers reported that a returned soldier from Melbourne was in hospital at Randwick with suspected pneumonic influenza. Meanwhile, travellers from Melbourne had carried the disease to NSW. Ten days later, there were 50 to 100 cases.Ĭommonwealth and Victorian health authorities initially believed the outbreak was a local variety of influenza prevalent in late 1918.Ĭonsequently, Victoria delayed until January 28 notifying the Commonwealth, as required by a 1918 federal-state agreement designed to coordinate state responses. Spanish flu arrivesĪustralia’s first case of Spanish flu was likely admitted to hospital in Melbourne on January 9 1919, though it was not diagnosed as such at the time. The story of how Australia - and particular the NSW government - handled Spanish flu in 1919 provides some clues about how COVID-19 might play out here in 2020. This is not the only similarity between the two pandemics.Īlthough history does not repeat, it rhymes. In a remarkable coincidence, the first media reports about Spanish flu and COVID-19 in Australia both occurred on January 25 – exactly 101 years apart. Lunella Lafayette is a young African-American girl who daydreams and loves to invent. Issue #47 of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (released November 2019) has been billed as the final issue of the series.įictional character biography Heroic beginnings She compared her story to a " Ghibli one" due to the immense relationship between the title characters. She was primarily inspired by the clear diversity that Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur promoted, further comparing the character Lunella to herself. Īrtist Natacha Bustos found the character a relief from the norm of other typical superheroes. KIRBY MOON SECRETS SERIESThey also viewed the series as a direct sequel to the Moon-Boy and Devil Dinosaur series from Jack Kirby, hence the first villains that Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur face are the Killer-Folk. She’s somebody who’s kind of awkward, a bit off the beaten path and people are not aware of her. And then said a girl-the only difference was I made her younger, and that made her even cooler. So she was just, originally this character who was kind of like Inspector Gadget, but a little less campy-a little more knowing what she’s doing? You know, having gadgets come out of her backpack or whatever, and rollerskating around the city and solving crimes kind of things. Reeder explains the primary inspiration for the creation of the character: They came up with the idea of Devil Dinosaur interacting with a girl and fell in love with the idea of working with a hero who wasn't a "regular cape-and-tights superhero". The genesis of the character came from editor Mark Paniccia, who is a fan of the character Devil Dinosaur and, along with editor Emily Shaw, had hired Montclare and Reeder to pen the basis for a new series that involved the character ending up in modern day. The character was created by writers Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder (who also designed the character), and artist Natacha Bustos, first appearing in Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1 (November 2015). Somewhat replacing Moon-Boy, she is paired up with Devil Dinosaur, with whom she shares a mental link due to being an Inhuman. This was the product of collaboration between the three major court painters of the day: the Italian Jesuit-missionary artist Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), the Manchu bannerman official-painter Tang Dai 唐岱 (1673- after 1752), and the southerner Chinese painter Chen Mei 陳枚 (ca. 1735-1796) commissioned the painting New Year’s Beginning ( Sui zhao tu 歲朝圖) ( Fig. Image in the public domain.Īt the end of 1736, the newly-enthroned Emperor Qianlong (r. As mechanical clocks became the most salient objects and technologies of Sino-European exchange, flourishing especially during the High Qing era (1661-1796), such effects generated a sense of spatiotemporal profusion. They acted out a spectacle of power that was manifested in an illusory unity of variations governed by the workings of an automatic system. When activated alongside other movable accessories on mechanical clocks, firework ornaments highlighted a sense of synchronic time and fueled the vigor of temporal imminence. I argue that fireworks not only engaged in redefinitions of art and power, but also that the lifelike simulation of pyrotechnic effects in objects such as automaton clocks transformed conceptions and strategies of ornamentation. It opens up a broader discussion regarding the conceits and sensations of pyrotechnics and pyropolitics, while also responding to recent accounts of early modern European pyrotechnic arts and sciences. Exploring the custom of fireworks in China alongside their pictorial representations and decorative applications in a transcultural context during the long eighteenth century, this article draws connections among various artifacts that enacted pyrotechnic spectacles and elicited synesthetic immersions of light, sound, motion, hue, and temperature. Fireworks in the early modern world paradoxically wedded a local experience of ephemeral sensations with an impulse to create patterns of perpetual motion.
